It invests user\u2019s funds through investing algorithms instead of typical fund managers.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"font-500830\">They call their investing algorithm the Economic Regime-based Asset Allocation (ERAA). In essence:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li><span class=\"font-500830\">You select your risk profile (a.k.a. StashAway Risk Index \u2013 SRI)<br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">p<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span class=\"font-500830\">StashAway will invest on your behalf into assets like equities, commodities, and bonds. This is mainly done through <a href=\"https:\/\/nomoneylah.com\/2021\/03\/10\/etf-investing-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs)<\/a>.<br \/><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">p<\/span><\/span><\/li>\r\n<li><span class=\"font-500830\">ERAA will readjust your portfolio according to your risk preference. This is done by considering things like market cycle, macroeconomic shifts, and so on.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">p<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"StashAway_Risk_Index_SRI_Select_Your_Risk_Profile\"><\/span><span class=\"font-555555\"><strong>StashAway Risk Index (SRI): Select Your Risk Profile<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span class=\"font-500830\">There are 12 different StashAway Risk Index (SRI) for users to choose from. Each Risk Index is made up of a combination of equities, commodities, bonds and cash. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"font-500830\"><em>By the way, what does SRI mean?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"font-500830\"><strong>The lowest 6.5% risk index means that there\u2019s a 99% chance that you <em>won\u2019t<\/em> lose more than 6.5% of your capital in a given year.<\/strong> To achieve this, your portfolio will be made up mainly of low-risk assets like bonds and a minimal exposure to higher-risk equities.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"font-500830\">As we move up the risk index, your portfolio will have less exposure to bonds and more on equities.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"font-500830\">Hence, logically speaking, the higher your risk index (up to 36%), the more volatile your portfolio would be, while giving you a <em>potentially<\/em> higher return.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">p<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"MUST_KNOW_Time-weighted_Return_Money-weighted_Return\"><\/span><span class=\"font-555555\"><strong>MUST KNOW: Time-weighted Return &amp; Money-weighted Return<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span class=\"font-500830\">There are 2 metrics that StashAway uses to measure the performance of their portfolios.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_70866\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70866\" style=\"width: 786px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nomoneylah.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/TWR-vs-MWR.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-70866 \" src=\"https:\/\/nomoneylah.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/TWR-vs-MWR.png\" alt=\"MWR vs TWR. Most people would be better off using TWR.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<h3><span class=\"font-500830\"><strong>Time-weighted Return (TWR)<\/strong> <\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span class=\"font-500830\">TWR is the most commonly-used metrics, and it\u2019s an easy metric to compare returns between different portfolios:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p><span class=\"font-500830\">\u201cBy tracking the portfolio\u2019s performance from your first deposit, a portfolio\u2019s TWR removes the distortions that various cash inflows and outflows create. In essence, TWR measures the portfolio manager\u2019s ability to generate returns, not the effects of an individual\u2019s deposit and withdrawal behaviors.\u201d \u2013 StashAway<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p><span class=\"font-500830\"><strong>In other words, if you invest on a consistent basis via StashAway (a.k.a. Dollar Cost Average \u2018DCA\u2019), then you should be looking at the TWR metrics.<\/strong> This is because TWR reflects how well StashAway is making returns without being distorted by the effect of deposits &amp; withdrawals.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">p<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><span class=\"font-500830\"><strong>Money-weighted Return (MWR)<\/strong> <\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span class=\"font-500830\">MWR assigns a weight to each of your deposits and withdrawals. So, if you make an RM1,000 deposit, it will have a <em>lesser<\/em> impact on your portfolio\u2019s MWR than an RM100,000 deposit.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p><span class=\"font-500830\">\u201cThis approach helps to gauge the impact and effectiveness of an individual\u2019s <em>timing<\/em> of deposits and withdrawals. As a result, due to the emphasis of deposits and withdrawals, MWR may naturally overweight or underweight the returns.\u201d \u2013 StashAway<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p><span class=\"font-500830\"><strong>In short, when we are talking about returns, we should be referring to TWR instead of MWR.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">p<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"StashAway_Performance\"><\/span><span class=\"font-555555\"><strong>StashAway Performance<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><span class=\"font-500830\">2020 was a unique and challenging year for investing due to the global pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"font-500830\"><strong>That said, <em>all<\/em> StashAway\u2019s portfolios posted a positive return in 2020.<\/strong> Of all, the majority of StashAway\u2019s portfolios (especially higher risk portfolios) outperformed their benchmark by a significant run \u2013 impressive!<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span class=\"font-500830\"><!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\r\n\r\n<!-- wp:separator {\"className\":\"is-style-dots\"} --><\/span><\/p>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_70864\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70864\" style=\"width: 482px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nomoneylah.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/StashAway-2020-return.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-70864 \" src=\"https:\/\/nomoneylah.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/StashAway-2020-return.png\" alt=\"StashAway rate of return for 2020.
